For a frequency counter, three things determine fitness for purpose: resolution, input frequency range and channel count, and timebase quality. Resolution is often quoted in digits per second of gate time and tells you how finely you can measure. Input range and channels decide what and how many signals you can connect. But the dominant accuracy factor is the timebase — a standard TCXO is fine for casual work, an oven-controlled OCXO is the lab standard, and a GPS-disciplined oscillator (GPSDO) gives you traceable long-term accuracy without sending the unit out for reference checks.
